Collections of Inspiration
These are only a few of the many collections that are housed in the Humboldt Room. These collections offer different perspectives on literary efforts, and they give writers and readers a place to explore the approaches that other authors and content creators took. The collections contribute to the history and creativity of the community, university, and library.
Jodi Stutz Collection
Jodi Lee Stutz, a Humboldt State University graduate in 1984, was associated with the University’s literary magazine, Toyon, as Assistant Editor in 1983 and Managing Editor in 1984. After her death in 1987, Toyon created the Jodi Stutz Memorial Award in Poetry in her honor.
The Jodi Stutz Collection includes original literary manuscripts, creative and analytical works, personal correspondence, and teaching material from her time as a graduate student.
Andrew Genzoli Collection
Andrew Genzoli was a journalist and Humboldt County local. He started his career as a journalist in the early 1930s while still a student at Ferndale High School when he served as correspondent for the Humboldt Times and then later as a staff reporter.
The collection consists of historical materials relating to Northwestern California, especially Humboldt County, and reflects all aspects of Genzoli's career and volunteer work as journalist and teacher. The collection includes manuscripts, scrapbooks, clippings, notes, newspaper indexes (for late 19th Century), photographs, and ephemera.
This collection contributes to literary efforts through the images associated with the authors, Mary Ellicott Arnold and Mabel Reed, of the novel In The Land Of The Grasshopper Song: Two Women in the Klamath River Indian Country in 1908-09.
Morris Herman Collection
Eureka poet Morris (Morry) Herman continually produced and frequently shared his poetry at readings in Arcata, CA, and in several small self-published booklets during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. His collection includes about 150 loose sheets of type written poems. Several contain Morry's handwritten edits. And also a copy of each of his publications, Something Inside Us Which Flys, What Makes the Plum Tree Blossom, The Swimmer Kicks Free.
