Spring 2019 Visiting Writer
Joseph Marshall III
Tuesday, April 9
5:00-7:00pm
Native American Forum, BSS162
Joseph Marshall III (Sicangu Lakota) was born and raised on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. Because he was raised in a traditional Lakota household by his maternal grandparents, his first language is Lakota. In that environment he also learned the tradition of oral storytelling. One of his most treasured and meaningful experiences was to be one of the founders of the Sinte Gleska University (1971) on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. He has developed a leadership seminar based on the leadership lessons of Crazy Horse.
Joseph has also taught at the high school and university levels, developed curriculum, and now he writes full time. He has published fifteen nonfiction works, three novels, a collection of short stories and essays, two children’s books and was contribution author in five other publications, and has written several screenplays. His newest book is Crazy Horse Weeps: The Challenge of Being Lakota in White America.
